alternative energy
Alternative energy sources might be an excellent ecological solution when building a new house in Catalonia. Two main sources can be used, depending on the location.
Wind energy, in the form of a small wind turbine, can be useful when renovating a rural property in an area where the (in)famous Tramontana arrives. (The Tramontana is a strong wind from the north that can sometimes last for a week.)
Solar energy is much more useful in Catalonia than in the north of Europe. Solar energy can be split into two different applications.
Domestic solar hot water systems and photovoltaic (PV) systems both use solar panels, but the panels are completely different in both function and design. Solar hot water panels are basically hollow panels with liquid running through them. The panels are designed to absorb the maximum amount of heat from the sun, and transfers it to the liquid. This liquid can then be used to heat your domestic water, your pool or even your whole house.
PV panels convert light from the sun directly into electricity. This is done completely noiselessly, and without any chemical or mechanical processes. This electricity can then be used in the house, or it can be sold back to the electricity company.
One of the partners of JAb Architects has extensive experience with alternative energy; he has been living for more than five years now with no connection to the electricity grid, and relies solely on alternative energy for his electrical needs.
