For climates with moderate heating and cooling needs, heat pumps offer an energy-efficient alternative to gas and oil heaters. Like a refrigerator, heat pumps use electricity to move heat from a cool space into a warm space, making the cool space cooler and the warm space warmer. During the heating season, heat pumps move heat from the cool outdoors into your warm house; during the cooling season, heat pumps move heat from your cool house into the warm outdoors. Because they move heat rather than generate heat, heat pumps can provide up to 4 times the amount of energy they consume.
This type of heating is especially suited for houses on the coast, were the sea moderates the climate. An interesting combination is that of the (air) heat pump with radiant floor heating (and cooling) during the night and using cheaper electricity tariffs. The heat generated during the night is then slowly given off by the mass of the floor during the day.
We have installed several of these systems in the last couple of years for our clients and we are convinced that this is the most cost effective solution to combine heating and cooling needs along the Costa Brava.
