Floor heating has several advantages over the traditional way of heating a house with radiators.
Radiant heat is the most comfortable form of heat, since (like the rays of the sun) it heats objects rather than air. The heat radiates to your body and you feel warm and comfortable. Unlike with conventional heating, the floors, rather than ceilings, are the warmest part of the room, so that you have warm feet and a cool head.
Because it utilizes low temperature water (32-54°C), radiant heat is more efficient and will save 20-40% of the cost of heating with conventional methods. In addition, because it warms your body rather than the air, you feel comfortable at a lower temperature and you can turn your thermostat down to 18° C. Radiant heat does heat the floor and not the air. This means there are no drafts or air movement so dust and germs aren't spread around, resulting in a healthier living environment.
Radiant heating is also much more attractive than conventional heating as it is installed invisible. There is no need to concern yourself with the location of radiators. The heat is out of the way, providing maximum freedom in designing a house.
Floor heating is a perfect match in combination with solar panels. Because the thermal mass of the floor collects and stores the heat from the sun during the day, it functions as a storage container which releases its heat slowly during the evening into the night. This time delay is also one of the main disadvantages of floor heating, as it will take some time to notice the effect when turning up the thermostat.
Another benifit of the underfloor heating installation in the Spanish climate is that it can also be used to cool your house down in the hot summer months. This can be done by using an energy efficient heat pump.
